4:00 pm
>> just a joke, folks. it wasn't us. thanks for inviting us into your home tonight. that it for this "special report," fair, balanced, and unafraid. captions by closed captioning services >> tonight on "the fox report." bullets fly again at virginia tech. the same school that was home to america's worst ever campus shooting. now police, one officer, and one other person are dead. still questions about the shooter and the motive for murder. >> i could see his face and he was covered in blood. >> harris: the first report started flooding in this afternoon. the gunman on the loose and headed toward a campus building. >> witnesses reported to police that the shooter fled on foot. >> harris: tonight, what we now know about the latest violence at the home of the hokie. the attorney general eric holder gets an earful about
4:01 pm
the fast and furious gun sting and the death of a border patrol agent. >> brian terry is dead today, in my opinion, because of this failed program. >> harris: and the attorney general admits fast and furious was a mistake. >> allowing guns to walk, whether in this administration or the prior one is wholly unacceptable. >> harris: lawmakers say someone needs to take responsibility. >> mr. attorney general, the blame must go to your desk. >> harris: and now talk of somebody getting impeached. plus, the iranians show off a u.s. drone they claim they knocked out of the sky. and tonight, concerns about who could get their hands on this high tech american hardware. first, four years after the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history, blood shed and violence return to the campus of virginia tech university. i'm harris faulkner in tonight
4:02 pm
for shepard smith. here's what we know at this hour. investigators say earlier today a gunman walked up to an officer, who was involved in a traffic stop, and shot and killed that police officer. then the suspect reportedly ran for it. a few minutes later administrators locking down the school for the better part of the day. and we followed the story here on fox for hours. the policeman who was killed at a parking lot near the coliseum. if you are unfamiliar with the campus, that's near the famous lane stadium where the hokie's play football. police then reportedly found a second body at the duck pond lot. we are told they found a gun next to that body. still unclear whether that person was the original shooter. now a law enforcement source is telling fox news channel tonight the gunman was believed to be a virginia tech student who killed himself. so far though, investigators are very tight-lipped on the record. >> i don't think there is a motive at this time. it's still being investigated. like i said, it's still in the early stages of it so we don't
4:03 pm
have a lot of the answers yet. >> harris: police say a number of people did witness the shooting of that officer, including several students. one who claims she was only a few feet away. >> as soon as i saw his face, i just started to cry because i, like obviously getting shot in the face it's not going to be good. and when the other officer started yelling his name to try to get him like-to-like wake up or gain consciousness, that's when the light really hit me. >> harris: students who were on campus at the time in a massacre in 2007 say today's events brought back a lot of painful memories as a you might imagine. our doug mckelway live at virginia tech campus in blacksburg with more tonight. doug, with the different reports about who might be deceased tonight, where is this case? >> well, it is, for all intents and purpose a closed case right now. police won't say that but for all intents and purposes that is the case. they have to obviously determine a motive.
4:04 pm
they have to determine the time line and put some pieces together. nobody doubts what really happened here. in fact, the police said that you can read between the lines. that, in effect, means this was a murder/suicide. there is no way that police would have allowed the students to go free from the lockdown which they imposed early this afternoon. if there was any risk to them. if there was any fear there was a gunman on the loose. this campus is still smarting from the 2007 mass shooting. they don't want to relive that they will have to relive it albeit on a smaller scale. >> in light of the turmoil and the trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns, i can only say that words don't describe our feelings and they're most allusive at this point in time. our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer and we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences. >> and, in fact, we have already heard, harris a word of a candlelight vigil and
4:05 pm
formal one slated for tonight and more formal ceremony being planned for tomorrow night. harris? >> harris: i know the university took so much criticism for the way it haled the 2007 massacre that was a part of our reporting back then. today how did they alert students. >> they have been working on an alert plan for years now and trying to hone that plan and it worked perfectly today. they got the first call of that traffic stop at is it:15 this -- 12:15. police got man down. the campus was on total lockdown. it worked very effectively. there are a number of people on the campus here who are entitled to put that alert system into effect. a very good thing indeed because today at the very time the shooting happened, the university president and the chief of police happened to be, ironically, in washington about 200 miles up the road, testifying before an administrative law judge about a fine that they are facing for the poor police response to the 2007 shooting.
4:06 pm
harris? >> harris: the irony of that, doug mckelway, thank you very much. now we move to a dramatic day on capitol hill. where lawmakers spent hours grilling the attorney general of the united states eric holder. there to testify about operation fast and furious. that program was supposed to follow guns from the u.s. to mexico. but, investigators saying the feds lost track of hundreds of weapons. two of them turning up at the rder scene of u.s. border patrol agent brian terry. and republic lawmakers have called for the attorney general's resignation. during today's house judiciary committee hearing. wisconsin's jim sensenbrenner warned somebody needs to pay for this. >> you know, the thing is is that if we don't get to the bottom of this, and that requires your assistance on that, there is only one alternative that congress has. and it's called impeachment. >> harris: it's not exactly clear who he means worth
4:07 pm
noting. congress has never impeached a u.s. attorney general. our william la jeunesse on the story have the very beginning. live now from our west coast news hub. william with the latest on. this the republicans chided the attorney general for failing to turn over records, for being uninformed and not firing those involved in what he admits was a mistake that resulted in killings and would lead to more. >> will you be resigning over -- because of the fallout from fast and furious? >> i have no intention of resigning. i'm the attorney general who put an end to these misguided tactics. >> should anyone resign? >> again, on the basis of the information that i have at this point, no. >> so far, only u.s. attorney dennis burke resigned voluntarily. he authored this email after months of watching suspects buy, sell, and smuggle thousands of guns without arresting anyone. quote:
4:08 pm
now today the hearing ended with fireworks with oversight chairman darrell issa threatening holder with contempt. >> we'll respond in a way that other attorneys general has. >> john mitchell responded that way. >> the reference to john mitchell. let's think about that. think about that at some point as i said in the mccarthy hearings, at some point have you no shame? >> holder insisted that fast and furious was not a topdown operation originally in washington. some republicans disagree pointing to emails that suggest it was used to help justify stricter gun control laws. holder called that foolish, harris? >> harris: william, thank you very much. iran, now in possession of that high tech piece of american military hardware now will look at the drone went down and what iran could
